In 2004, the New Brunswick Free Public applied for an IDEAS grant to start a science out-reach program. Out of 50 applicants only 15 proposals were accepted for funding, and the library's proposal was one. We were awarded a two-year grant from NASA to expand our current science programs and create the Exploring the Universe @ Your Library program. The aim of the project was to enliven and create excitement around the sciences, using space as a focal point. The program was led by Robert Belvin, the library’s director, and Rutgers professors Drs. Ted Williams and Carlton Pryor.

Each month we explored some part of space, using the New Jersey curriculum standards as a starting point. A scientist led the first program of each month and we further explored that concept introduced at our second program.

During the summer of 2007, our science programs incorporated the summer reading theme, Get a Clue @ your library by holding spy and CSI themed programs.
